 William Jurian Kaula included this news clipping in his September 1897 diaries. It  was published in the Boston Herald on September 12, 1897. At the time William was studying painting in France. He apparently found this description of the American artists in France applicable to his own experiences.

  James Roger A descendant of James Roger donated six diaries written from 1908 through 1913 to the New Ipswich Historical Society.  Members of the NIHS have been transcribing the diaries (hand written in script) into text, which will eventually be available to Society members. A Brief History of New Ipswich - Part 1

  Some Background I received a nice phone call from Sylvia Kaarto (Her husband owned New Ipswich Market). She mentioned that she had a document about the history of New Ipswich and wished to donate it to the New Ipswich Historical Society. It was three typed pages but undated and unsigned. I suspect that it might have been written in 1970 because of a reference to a census number. I decided to transcribe the contents from the document which will make it searchable and hopefully easier to read. Here is the text from page one. A Brief History - Page 1   Very soon after the first colonists of New England arrived, settlers penetrated far up the beautiful valleys of the Connecticut and the Merrimac. Assuming our readers have been following the James Roger diary entries, they (you) are then well familiar with the name Hamish. James, almost daily, mentioned Hamish's comings and goings. Arguably, the Roger family vicariously satisfied any longing for adventure they may have had through Hamish. He came and went by way of the train that stopped in Greenville, regularly pursued various forms of available work, and moved around Massachusetts often due to job location(s) as well as dissatisfaction with his "digs". After a good deal of research, I strongly believe Hamish was the youngest son of James and Margaret Roger.
