Among the glass negatives in the collection of the New Ipswich,NH Historical society is this photo of a rural church. Written on the protective sleeve the caption "Finnish Church" was written.

At first I thought it might be taken in Finland, but since all the other plates were taken in either New Ipswich or Greenville, I suspect this was local.

Is it a church or a home?

This is another glass negative photo that eludes me. The nearby building on the left appears to be a church but lacks a cross on the cupola, Without trees it is so difficult to determine where this might have been taken.

  Some Background I received a nice phone call from Sylvia Kaarto (Her husband owned New Ipswich Market). She mentioned that she had a document about the history of New Ipswich and wished to donate it to the New Ipswich Historical Society. It was three typed pages but undated and unsigned. I suspect that it might have been written in 1970 because of a reference to a census number.   James Roger A descendant of James Roger donated six diaries written from 1908 through 1913 to the New Ipswich Historical Society.  Members of the NIHS have been transcribing the diaries (hand written in script) into text, which will eventually be available to Society members. They daily entries are a wonderful snapshot into life in New Ipswich at the turn 20 th century. James Roger as of January 1, 1908 age: 66 years 4 months 14 days James was born August 8 th 1841 in Kirkmichael , Ayrshire Scotland.  Married Margaret Isabel Neil June 1867 (she died June 10 1913).  He was a clerk in Birmingham England, and entered the railway service in 1866, being station master at Rosslyn Castle near Edinburgh for thirty-one years.  He was ordained an elder in the Established Church (Presbyterian) of Scotland in 1878 and elected a member the general assembly in 1896.  He came to America in fall of 1897 and has since resided in New Ipswich, where he has a duck farm and...

Trivia Related to the James Roger Family By Kim Black, December 2022 While researching James and Hamish Roger, I stumbled upon a very interesting factoid.  The steamship SS State of Nebraska had carried some significant passengers by the time the Roger family made their way to America in 1897. Before we get to that, though, you might be interested in the origins and specs of the ship.  It was built in 1880 at Glasgow by London & Glasgow Co. for the State Line.  In 1891, it was taken over by the Allan Line of Liverpool, England.  The ship was 385.2 ft. from stem to stern and 43.3 ft. wide.  James and family boarded in Glasgow, picked up additional passengers in Moville, Ireland and disembarked at the Port of New York.  The State of Nebraska made many Trans-Atlantic trips before being decommissioned.
